Extreme heat waves increase mortality

Morbidity and death increase during days of intense heat waves. There is a risk of increasing patients in the hospital this year as well. Health Minister Samant Lal Sen has ordered the country's hospitals to be prepared to deal with the adverse conditions of extremely hot weather.

Samant Lal Sen told reporters after the meeting with the officials of the Ministry of Health and Directorate of Health at the secretariat on Sunday that the fire is going on. Everything is under control so far. But no one has control over nature. Now those who do not need to be admitted to the hospital should not be admitted. He also said, "The holidays of educational institutions may be extended depending on the situation." Because, we will not put children at risk.'

The Department of Health has developed guidelines for the treatment of heat illness. The Directorate will train trainers on the use of these guidelines on Monday. After that, from April 24, doctors from all over the country will be trained through zoom. This was known by talking to the officials of the Ministry of Health and the Directorate of Health.

The Department of Health has developed guidelines for the treatment of heat illness. The Directorate will train trainers on the use of these guidelines on Monday.

The guidelines, prepared with the support of UNICEF, said that due to hot weather and heat flow, human morbidity and mortality increase, damage to the womb of pregnant women, mental stress, reduced physical work capacity and increased occupational health risks. It is said in that guide that death increases in the country during heat wave days.

As soon as the month of March goes by, the people of almost all parts of the country are under intense heat. Before the end of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr holiday, people are hearing about intense heat for a week. Pure sunshine since early morning. People don't want to go out. The wind of the electric fan is not able to give relief to the people. The rickshaw pullers, the farmers are barely panting. There are reports that the number of patients is increasing in some hospitals.

The representatives of Prothom Alo of Jessore, Chuadanga, Rajshahi, Pabna, Barisal, citing the relevant authorities, said that the number of patients in the government hospitals of these districts has increased in the last few days. Bangladesh Children's Hospital and Institute in the capital also saw increased patient pressure.

According to the guidelines, developed with the support of UNICEF, hot weather and heat flow increase human morbidity and mortality, damage to pregnant women's wombs, increase mental stress, reduce physical work capacity and increase occupational health risks. Deaths in the country increase during heat wave days.

A 22 percent increase in deaths was observed

The guide has illustrated descriptions of the health effects of extreme heat. It says: Heat causes dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, fatigue, nausea, fever, sudden drop in blood pressure. Beyond that, there are additional problems for pregnant women: the fetus suffers from malnutrition, the risk of premature birth and stillbirth.

The guide cites a 2017 study that says deaths increase by 22 percent on days of intense heat waves.

The study was originally done by the American Metrological Society. The study was conducted by five researchers from the Red Cross Road Crescent Climate Center in the Netherlands, University of California, USA. Their research paper was published in the US Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology in October 2017.

The researchers reviewed data from 35 meteorological stations of the Meteorological Department. At the same time, he reviewed the birth and death data of the Sample Vital Registration System (SVRS) of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). In this review, researchers took data from 1989 to 2011.

Heat wave or heat wave is defined in meteorology. According to that definition, how much heat wave has passed over Bangladesh in 22 years, they have found out the number. They also calculated the number of deaths on heatwave days and compared the number of deaths on days with normal temperatures. It found 22 percent more deaths during heatwaves than during normal times. The researchers, however, did not include maternal deaths and accidental deaths in this calculation.

There is more research on the increased mortality in heat waves. The Health Department's guidance, citing another study, said between 2003 and 2007, heat-related deaths in the country increased by 1 to 3 percent.

Heat stroke and heat treatment

Samant Lal Sen tried to explain what heatstroke is to journalists at the secretariat yesterday. He said the symptoms of heatstroke are sudden or rapid increase in body temperature, unconsciousness, dizziness, severe headache, increased heart rate, muscle tension. In case of heatstroke, body sweat decreases, vomiting, shortness of breath, mental illusions, convulsions occur.

Every hospital has been informed about the treatment to be given to such patients.
