Chuet Closed Announcement, Bus Fire Enraged Students

Students set fire to the bus after Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology announced closure. It's 4:30 pm today

After four days of protests following the death of two students in a road accident, the Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CHUTE) has been closed indefinitely by the authorities. Students have been instructed to vacate the halls by 5 pm today Thursday and 9 am tomorrow Friday morning.

This decision was taken in the 151st emergency meeting of the Academic Council which lasted from 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm today. Later, this decision was communicated to all parties through a circular signed by University Registrar Sheikh Mohammad Humayun Kabir.

The meeting was held in the academic council conference room of the campus administration building. It was presided over by Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Rafiqul Alam. Vice Chancellor Mohammad Jamal Uddin Ahmed, Registrar Sheikh Mohammad Humayun Kabir, Director of Student Welfare Department were present. Rezaul Karim and others.

Students have been protesting for four days after the death of two classmates in a road accident. The students became more angry after being instructed to leave the hall. A Shah Amanat Paribahan bus was set on fire in the Swabandha Chatwar area of the campus. At that time, some students behaved offensively with some teachers. Currently there is a tense situation in the campus.

Shanto Saha (22), a third-year student of civil engineering department, and Taufiq Hossain (21), a second-year student, were killed when they were hit by a bus while riding a motorcycle at 3:30 pm last Monday. Zakaria Himu (21) was injured. When they reached Jianagar area of Rangunia upazila near Chuet, a passenger bus of Shah Amanat Paribahan hit their motorcycle from behind.

After the accident became known, the students started protesting. The road was blocked for the first time last Monday at seven o'clock in the evening. A Shah Amanat Paribahan bus was burnt. Besides, two more buses were vandalized. Later on the assurance of the authorities, the student withdrew the blockade program at around nine o'clock in the night. Later that night at 3 o'clock the program of the new movement was fixed. Then last Wednesday students blocked the road for about 13 hours. The road is still closed today.
